Direct Access Diagnosis & Management

Colorado is a direct access state. This means that you do not need a physician's referral in order to receive physical therapy treatment. Exception: Patients with Medicare or Medicaid as their primary insurance need a referral.

Direct Access Diagnosis & Management

In the state of Colorado, commercial insurance companies do not require a referral to be evaluated and treated by a Doctor of Physical Therapy. This allows a streamlined treatment approach for a number of physical impairments, including diagnosis and treatment of muscle strains, ligament sprains, aggravation of disc herniations or stenosis, vertigo, migraines, and more.

If you or someone you know is in need of evaluation and treatment options and have insurance coverage from Aetna, Cigna, BCBS, and United Healthcare, etc., you can call and schedule an appointment without going through your primary care physician.

Patients with Medicare or Medicaid as their primary insurance will need a referral from their physician. Studies have shown that direct access treatment of low back pain and other injuries saves consumers money and reduces the likelihood of overutilization of healthcare services.
