Vestibular Rehabilitation

About 90 million Americans experience dizziness at least once in their lifetime which can lead to balance deficits and functional limitations. If you are over 75 years of age, chances are you’ve seen your physician for dizziness. Dizziness can then lead to falls which account for 50% of accidental deaths in the elderly population.

A form of dizziness is known as vertigo and can be caused by both peripheral and central vestibular dysfunction. Most vestibular disorders are peripheral (inner ear and vestibular nerve) with the most common peripheral vestibular disorder being benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Our therapists are trained in techniques to help re-position the “crystals” and help you get rid of the dizzy symptoms.

In addition to repositioning crystals, our therapists are trained in vestibular therapy which is a form of physical therapy that uses specialized exercises to help gaze and gait stabilization. Most of these exercises involve head movements that are essential in stimulating and retraining the vestibular system.
